Week of August 14 - 18, 2017

Welcome Back Everyone!!!! This first week is devoted to information, directions and expectations for  my 7th grade Language Arts class. Although this can be somewhat overwhelming, it is important to take one day at a time and pace yourself. I promise it will all work out in the end.

As always, there may be some slight changes in the weekly plans, so I ask you to be flexible and patient. Communication is very important and I urge you to check the blog regularly in order to stay on task with the classwork and the assignments.

Monday: This day will basically be a day of orientation. There will be a lot of information introduced and discussed while allowing ample time for any questions. Also, The Outsiders (your required summer reading) will be introduced, including any upcoming requirements for the novel. All students will receive a "study guide" for The Outsiders. Vocabulary books and Language Arts Grammar books will be given to all students.

Tuesday: Work and instruction will begin. Vocabulary instructions and requirements will be given. The main discussion for the day will be "The Recipe for Good Writing" There will be a quiz on the "recipe" on Friday. Paragraph writing will be discussed, as well as writing in class. Students will be responsible for writing a paragraph on a topic given in class.The paragraph will be due on Thursday for homework.

Wednesday:  Same as a above for Blocks 6 and 7.

Thursday:  The paragraphs will be read by the students to the class for feedback and evaluation. We will review the "Recipe for Good Writing". The rest of the class period will focus on the development of a good paragraph and the importance of well-constructed sentences within the paragraph. Homework is to study for the "Recipe for Good Writing" quiz.

Friday:  Quiz on "Recipe for Good Writing". Review the week's work and prepare for the next week.

This week is devoted to finishing the film, The Outsiders,  and continuing with the grammar pages 3 -7 including nouns as direct objects, indirect objects, objects of the preposition, and object complements. Students will have classwork and homework relating to these topics. There will not be a vocabulary unit this week due to an early dismissal on Friday for Yom Kippur .** I plan to meet with the students, individually, to discuss their compare / contrast essays the latter part of this week and the beginning of the next week. Monday: Finish watching the film, The Outsiders . If we do not get it done today, we will finish it in the next class period. Tuesday: Finish the film, if necessary. Week of September 11 - 15, 2017

This week will be devoted to going over The Outsiders test, Vocabulary # 3 (pages 35 -41), beginning the grammar unit (Parts of Speech), and a follow-up writing assignment related to The Outsiders. Monday : Unit # 3 Vocabulary (pages 35 -41) The first 10 minutes, students will begin this in class. They will finish it for homework, We will go over the answers to The Outsiders test. We will discuss what a "noun" is. Students will be bringing their "grammar workbooks" to class for class work and homework for the next few weeks.  Students will be given the assignment of writing a compare / contrast essay on choosing a character from The Outsiders and someone in their life. More on that will be discussed throughout the week. Homework: Finish Vocabulary (pages 35-41) and pages 1 and 2 in the Grammar workbook .
