Week Of August 21 - 25, 2017

This week will be devoted to the first Unit of Vocabulary (pages 21 - 27). There will be a quiz on the words on Friday. This will be a regular weekly pattern. We will also begin the review of the summer reading requirement, The Outsiders.  Writing practice will be an ongoing exercise as we concentrate on the "recipe" for good writing.

Monday: Introduce Unit 1 of Vocabulary (pages 21 - 27). The students will have 10 minutes in the beginning of class to get started on the unit and will complete ALL pages ( 21 - 27) for homework. The remaining time left of the class will be the introduction and discussion of The Outsiders. This discussion and class work on the novel will take approximately two (2)weeks to complete. It is imperative to pay attention in class and to take any notes which will help in the understanding of the class discussions. A study guide has been given to all students for help in remembering the characters' names, their purposes in the novel and any other information needed to fully understand the story and the connection with the present issues. Homework: pages 21-27 Unit 1 Vocabulary.

Tuesday: Go over the Vocabulary homework (pages 21-27). Each week, when we have Vocabulary, the students will be responsible for ALL the pages of that particular unit. Continue with the discussion of The Outsiders. The discussions will relate to the various characters and how the time period, and its problems, are similar to what is happening today. Homework: Study for Vocabulary Unit 1 quiz for Friday. Review any class notes on The Outsiders.

Wednesday:  Same as Tuesday for blocks 6 and 7. Block 2 will review for the Vocabulary quiz for Friday. We will continue with The Outsiders.  Homework: Study for Vocabulary quiz #1. Go over any notes from class discussions.

Thursday: We will review for the Vocabulary quiz for Friday. The discussions on The Outsiders will continue. Homework: Study for Vocabulary quiz #1.

Friday: Vocabulary Quiz Unit #1.  If there is any extra time, go over any questions for the week.

This week is devoted to finishing the film, The Outsiders,  and continuing with the grammar pages 3 -7 including nouns as direct objects, indirect objects, objects of the preposition, and object complements. Students will have classwork and homework relating to these topics. There will not be a vocabulary unit this week due to an early dismissal on Friday for Yom Kippur .** I plan to meet with the students, individually, to discuss their compare / contrast essays the latter part of this week and the beginning of the next week. Monday: Finish watching the film, The Outsiders . If we do not get it done today, we will finish it in the next class period. Tuesday: Finish the film, if necessary. Week of September 11 - 15, 2017

This week will be devoted to going over The Outsiders test, Vocabulary # 3 (pages 35 -41), beginning the grammar unit (Parts of Speech), and a follow-up writing assignment related to The Outsiders. Monday : Unit # 3 Vocabulary (pages 35 -41) The first 10 minutes, students will begin this in class. They will finish it for homework, We will go over the answers to The Outsiders test. We will discuss what a "noun" is. Students will be bringing their "grammar workbooks" to class for class work and homework for the next few weeks.  Students will be given the assignment of writing a compare / contrast essay on choosing a character from The Outsiders and someone in their life. More on that will be discussed throughout the week. Homework: Finish Vocabulary (pages 35-41) and pages 1 and 2 in the Grammar workbook .
